Abandoned golf courses are being reclaimed by nature
  + stars: | 2023-10-27 | by ( Nell Lewis | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
CNN —Golf courses, despite occupying large green spaces, are not necessarily good for the environment. Santa Barbara's Ocean Meadows golf course has been returned to its wetland state, which doubles as a flood defense for the city. Rivers and streams are often diverted or altered to make way for a golf course, but conservationists want them to flow freely. In other areas of the country, local councils are repurposing unprofitable municipal golf courses to create more natural spaces. A golf course turned nature reserve, Yalukit Willam can now be enjoyed by the Melbourne residents.

KARACHI, Pakistan, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Pakistani ecommerce logistics startup Rider, backed by YCombinator, is looking into acquiring BlueEx (UNIV.PSX) the only listed Express Courier Logistics Company in Pakistan, it told Reuters on Thursday. "We are carving out and acquiring the e-commerce logistics business which currently operates under the brand name BlueEx. This is not an acquisition of Universal Network System Limited as a whole," said Salman Allana, founder and CEO of Rider. If the transaction goes through, this will be the first acquisition of a listed company by a startup, and the first major acquisition of a company listed on Pakistan's Growth Enterprise Market (GEM) board at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PAKS.PSX). While Rider has not disclosed the transaction value, it claims the acquisition will make Rider the third largest player in the ecommerce logistics space.

Swimply is expanding its marketplace to offer pickleball court rentals. Pickleball courts are even starting to fill the vacant space left behind by retailers in malls. In Stamford, Connecticut, for example, Pickleball America plans to turn 80,000 square feet of a former Saks Off 5th space into 28 pickleball courts. The company has been rapidly building courts — as well as converting courts from tennis to pickleball — and now has more than 400 pickleball courts at its more than 200 golf and country clubs across the country. Swimply court rentals range from $25-$100 per hour.

Co-manager James Davolos told Insider about the fund's approach to identifying market mistakes. Half the fund's money is in one stock, and Davolos explained why he's not hurrying to change that. Davolos and his team then investigate those areas and try to identify any mistakes the market has made about the quality of an investment. "Nobody at the firm follows a sector per se, or a geography, or a capitalization," Davolos told Insider in a recent interview. Texas Pacific doesn't have to pay for equipment or fund that work; it simply makes money from the drillers.
Feb 3 (Reuters) - Energy firms are using a chunk of their bumper quarterly profits from surging natural gas and fuel prices to reward shareholders with higher dividends and share buybacks. Here are six energy companies that Davolos believes are strong long-term investments. Expect high inflation to hurt earnings in 2023 and beyondOf all the trends Davolos spotted, one stands out most: inflation will be higher for longer. Most investors assumed that the high inflation of the 1970s and '80s was gone forever after the internet and other technology kept prices down during the previous two decades. Stocks broadly will likely suffer if inflation stays stubbornly high, Davolos said, given that higher prices weigh on firms' profit margins. Energy royalty companies' efficient, asset-light business model gives them lofty operating margins that are the envy of their peers.
The fund isn't tied to any index, nor does Schwartz try to mimic a specific sector weighting. About 40% of the fund's investments today are in energy, Schwartz said, with no bets on the consumer defensive and utilities sectors, according to Morningstar data. Then a trust, many people steered clear of the large Texas land owner, which owns land often used for oil and gas drilling, and traded at around $150 a share. Schwartz's bet on energy extends to a more traditional stake in Chevron , (4.3% of the fund) which he calls a premiere integrated oil and gas company. But Schwartz started accumulating energy stocks well before the latest rally, when crude oil plummeted during the pandemic.
